Police said that a recent Mississippi mayor candidate, was fatally wounded after he showed up at the home of his estranged spouse and refused to leave in spite of his brother-in law’s reported demands.

The Laurel Leader Call quoted Soso Police Chief Jimmy McCoy as saying, “It is a very bad situation.”

The Laurel Leader Call reported that Jason Adam Marshall, 41 was fatally wounded early on Wednesday morning as he arrived at the home he had shared with his wife, for 12 years, before their bitter divorce. Marshall ran for mayor in Soso’s special elections last month. Local media reported that he was also a volunteer firefighter.

The outlet reported that Marshall arrived at the house shortly before 4 am and was greeted by his brother in law who lives next door. The brother-in law was armed and demanded Marshall to leave the house, but Marshall refused.

Marshall reached for his 9mm handgun and the brother-in law fired multiple shots at the man, according to reports.

Tyler Hill, Soso Assistant Chief Tyler Hill said to WDAM that the two men both fired shots in the incident. McCoy told the press that Marshall, his estranged spouse, and their three children were in the house at the time the shooting occurred.

Hill said, “He was an honest man.” He was struggling badly and it seems that at this point he made a mistake.

The police said the shooting was a case of self-defense. However, an investigation is still ongoing. Jones County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the incident, and then turn its findings over to the local district prosecutor’s office.

Marshall had violent outbursts before his death. One of them was in February last year, when he loaded a firearm and threatened to murder his brother-in law, according to the outlet, citing divorce documents.

Marshall claimed that his wife had used illegal drugs and produced illicit videos in divorce proceedings, according to The Laurel Leader Call. She also allegedly threatened his children by taking them to his parents home in Georgia.

According to The Laurel Leader Call, a judge granted Marshall’s spouse an emergency domestic protective order and temporary custody over the children after Marshall had been ordered to undergo a psychological assessment in order to regain his visitation rights.

WDAM reported that law enforcement was still awaiting autopsy reports last week, despite the investigation.
