Officials said that a dog who fell off a cliff on the Oregon Coast has been reunited with his owners after a dramatic video rescue was captured by officials on New Year’s Day.

Leo the dog plunged from a cliff in Ecola State Park to a beach that was secluded below. Coast Guard (USCG), Pacific Northwest.

When the Coast Guard aircraft from Astoria arrived, first responders from the three local fire departments prepared to rappel down to the dog.

Over his headset, a rescuer from the USCG aircrew stated that “it looks like there’s a little more beach where [the dogs] is.”

An aircrew from the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest responded to a call for help after a dog fell down a cliff and onto a remote Oregon beach.

The aircrew dropped a rescue swimmer, along with a hoisting cart onto the remote beach. Rescuers could be seen approaching the dog slowly before placing it into the basket.

A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer was dropped from the helicopter to the secluded beach beneath the cliff.

The two were lifted safely off of the beach into the helicopter.

Jason, is this your first dog rescue? Over their headsets, the pilot asked the rescuer.

The rescue swimmer confirmed that this was the first dog rescue.

The helicopter landed on a nearby lot where Leo’s owner was waiting, according to officials.

Leo and his owners were reunited in a parking lot nearby.

The Coast Guard posted footage of Leo’s family and the happy reunion. The owner of the dog was seen hugging and thanking the rescue swimmer for saving Leo.

“Hugs. “Hugs all around,” said a USCG crew member.

Leo’s owners hugged their rescue swimmer.

Another rescuer also said, “I love it.”

The USCG later updated the owners on Leo’s health.

The dog’s owner told the agency that Leo spent the night at an emergency veterinarian. He has a few bruises and cuts. Overall, he’s doing well. “We are thankful that he’s alive and is expected to recover.”

The USCG was assisted by Cannon Beach, Nehalem and Seaside fire departments in Leo’s rescue.
