A email bomb threat sent to officials in a few states on Wednesday morning briefly disrupted the government and caused some evacuations of state capitols. However, no explosives were discovered and federal officials dismissed the threats quickly as a hoax.

These threats come after a recent spate of false reports about shootings in the homes of government officials.

Connecticut, Georgia Hawaii, Kentucky Maine, Michigan Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, and Montana are among the states which evacuated statehouses or offices.

In a press release, the FBI said that it takes hoax threat very seriously as it puts innocent people in danger.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear told X on Monday that the Capitol had been evacuated as state police investigated a report of a threat to the Secretary’s Office. The lawmakers were away for ethics training. However, Secretary of State spokesperson Michon Lindstrom confirmed that some candidate filings had been disrupted.

The “mass mail” warned that multiple explosives would go off within a few short hours.

On the second day, the legislature was in session, public safety officials closed down the Mississippi Capitol and the state Senate postponed its morning meeting. Bomb-sniffing canines circled the building before it was declared safe.

Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said that the investigation is ongoing and the Capitol or buildings in the surrounding area are not at risk.

In most states, the closures and disruptions were minimal.

Megan Grotzke is the spokesperson for the Department of Administration. She said that Montana’s Capitol Building reopened in less than two hours following a thorough sweep of the building. The threat was deemed to be untrue.

According to Kyle Christopherson, spokesperson for the Minnesota Judicial Branch, the Minnesota Supreme Court’s oral arguments inside the Capitol building were interrupted. Instead, they were moved to another courtroom in the Minnesota Judicial Center.

Other states, including Wyoming, Oklahoma Nebraska, New Hampshire Missouri and Maryland, received threats but did not close.

In recent days, “swatting calls” have targeted several public officials. Swatting is an esoteric call to the emergency services to get a police response.

A fake emergency call was made to Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia on Christmas morning. Maine Secretary of state Shenna Bellows received a “swatting attempt” a day after removing former President Donald Trump’s name from the primary ballot in the state under the Constitution’s clause on insurrection. Trump is appealing the decision.

Other public officials targeted recently include Republican U.S. Rep. Brandon Williams from New York, U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

Each year, hundreds of swatting incidents occur.
