Three Michigan Sheriff’s Deputies were praised for their “heroic rescue” of a man 74 years old who was on fire in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, Zachary Deng and Jonathon Korte responded to an emergency call at around 1:24 am on January 10, 2024.

Authorities said that the deputies of Macomb Township Fire & EMS were dispatched by Macomb Township Fire to a house in the 46400 block Leanna Drive, Macomb Township.

Deng arrived first at the scene. He saw flames through a closed front door and ran into the house.

Macomb County Sheriff’s Deputies rescued an 74-year old man from a fire in a house early on Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office released a video showing Deng kicking the front door several times.

The deputy opened the door and saw a man in a chair, completely engulfed by flames. He also noticed a woman inside the house and told her to leave.

Deng tried to smother a fire with a cloth, but failed, according to the sheriff’s department.

Fire extinguishers were then brought by Korte and Bartoli to the home. Together, they worked to extinguish the flames. Deng had to leave the house because of the thick black smoke, according to police.

The first deputy to arrive on the scene was Deputy Zachary Deng. He kicked in the front door after seeing flames from a window.

Korte then took control of the fire extinguisher, and used it to sweep away the flames and chair until they were gone. Keeva, the family dog was removed from the house by another deputy. Bartoli took over and used an extinguisher to put out the remaining fires while Macomb Fire arrived.

The fire started when the victim, who was smoking at the time, fell asleep and ignited a blanket. FOX 2 Detroit reported .

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is in a stable condition. The woman, who was also transported to a hospital, has since been released.

The deputies have been hailed as heroes.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said, “I commend these Deputies for their valiant efforts in this life-threatening scenario.” They acted quickly and selflessly to prevent a greater tragedy.
