New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced she will send the National Guard into the New York City subway system to combat the spike in violent crimes.

Hochul will send 1,000 members of the National Guard to police the subway system.

“For people who are thinking about bringing a gun or knife on the subway, at least this creates a deterrent effect. They might be thinking, ‘You know what, it just may just not be worth it because I listened to the mayor and I listened to the governor and they have a lot more people who are going to be checking my bags,’” Hochul said at a news conference in New York City.

Hochul’s move comes hot on the heels of Mayor Eric Adams’ decision to reinstate bag searches to prevent shootings and stabbings on trains and platforms.

“We know people feel unsafe,” Adams said during the announcement at City Hall on Tuesday.

“We are reinstituting bag checks. There are several things we are reinstituting in the system,” Adams said.

“We have crisis in our subway system right now. So far this year, three people have been killed in the subway. Three people have been killed. So our subway system right now is in a state of emergency,” said Charlton D’Souza of Passengers United.
