After breaking the security gate at Naval Base Coronado, an off-duty San Diego sheriff’s assistant was arrested for DUI

Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, was reportedly locked down temporarily Friday night after a San Diego Sheriff's deputy attempted to breach the gate.

According to a release, a San Diego Sheriff’s deputy was taken into custody Friday night for allegedly trying and driving onto a Naval Base in Coronado without permission.

According to the sheriff’s office, Sergeant Michael Cruz was taken into custody on a DUI charge and booked into San Diego Central Jail. The 17-year-old veteran said he was not on duty at the time.

After Cruz drove through the checkpoint, military guards attacked Cruz’s vehicle but nobody was injured, officials said in a release.

FOX 5 San Diego reported that the incident led to the temporary lockdown of the base.

Cruz was released under his own recognizance. He is currently on administrative leave and paid for the investigation. Cruz is currently with the Sheriff’s Emergency Planning Detail.
