The Indianapolis Star reported that officers responded to a house on the northwest side of the city at 6:45 pm Sunday, after a woman had reported that someone was trying kill her. According to Lt. Shane Foley, a man with a machete outside began screaming at police officers. A standoff ensued.
SWAT officers used stun weapons and bean bags after negotiations failed. One officer opened fire after the man charged at them with a machete. The man died after being taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Foley stated that the officer who shot him is a veteran of 28 years and was placed on administrative leave.
Foley stated, “This is an incident that has tragic consequences.” “This was not the result that anyone wanted.” “The officers and SWAT took many steps to find other alternatives than deadly force.”
Foley confirmed that officers visited the house multiple times over the weekend in order to investigate the reports of a disturbing behavior by the occupant. Officers determined that the man did not pose a danger each time. It was not clear if those calls were about the man with the Machete.
