At least two people were killed and multiple others were injured in a shooting Saturday during a popular annual motorcycle rally in New Mexico, officials said.

Officials said that at least two people died and many others were injured during a shooting on Saturday, which took place at a popular motorcycle rally held annually in New Mexico.

It was not known how severe the injuries were. New Mexico State Police reported that one of the survivors had been flown to Denver, Colorado for treatment.

Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun, however, said that one person died in the hospital.

Calhoun confirmed 3 deaths and 5 injuries in an email.

Calhoun stated in a video interview given to the Questa Del Rio News that shooters were apprehended following the incident involving motorcycle gangs. Calhoun confirmed these details later to NBC News.

State Police did not disclose any information regarding arrests or those involved. They said that the scene was secure and “no threat to public security” is ongoing.

Calhoun reported that the gunfire occurred at 5 p.m. near two retail shops on the main street of the town.

The State Police announced earlier that evening that they were investigating an incident of shooting in the city. The State Police did not give any additional information on the shooting or possible victims.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said that it was supporting the state police with this investigation.

Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally, the 41st annual event, is held in the resort town of 675 northeast of Taos, at the southernmost end of the Rocky Mountains. The rally was expected to attract nearly 30,000 visitors over the weekend.

According to the website of the event, music performances are part of the events connected with the rally.

The town posted a message on Facebook stating that the crime scene was Main Street. The town reported that state and local law enforcement officials recommended only the most essential businesses remain open outside the investigation zone, and asked for others to stay closed on Sunday.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham confirmed that she had been in touch with Calhoun, law enforcement and the Red River community regarding the shooting. She tweeted: “My thoughts are for the Red River Community following this violent event.”
