Bannon, a Trump ally, was subpoenaed by Jack Smith in his grand jury investigation on Jan. 6, 2018.

Trump White House official Steve Bannon has been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury in Washington D.C. investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

WASHINGTON – According to two sources with knowledge of the matter, a federal grand juror in Washington, D.C., has subpoenaed former Trump White House official Steve Bannon in connection with Jack Smith’s special investigation into Jan. 6, and former President Donald Trump’s attempts to remain in office.

Sources say that the subpoena for documents and testimony was sent in late May. The grand jury that is investigating Trump’s conduct surrounding the events of Jan. 6, and his attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer power, is different from the grand juries in Miami who heard testimony about Trump’s handling classified documents on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Special Counsel declined to comment. Bannon’s lawyer Harlan Protass refused to comment.

Bannon, the host of a podcast now, was charged with contempt for refusing to comply after receiving congressional subpoenas by the Jan.6 committee. He was found guilty of two charges following a trial by jury in July 2022. In October, U.S. district judge Carl Nichols sent Bannon four months in federal jail, but suspended it while Bannon pursued his appeals.
