According to The Daily Wire reports,California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to use federal funds for six months rent for California’s homeless population. California is home to 30% of the nation’s homeless people –roughly 170,000 people.
From Daily Wire:
Newsom asked President Biden recently to approve “transitional rental” under Medi-Cal. This is the state’s version Medicaid. The Los Angeles Times reports that state officials have modeled the program on similar programs approved by the federal government in Arizona and Oregon. They would provide up to six months rent or temporary housing to low-income enrollees who depend on the state for their healthcare.
KHN was told by Newsom that he had been speaking to the president. “We can’t do this by ourselves.”
Proponents and Newsom argue that temporarily covering rent for the homeless would save taxpayers more than paying more into California’s institutional care in nursing homes, hospitals, and jails.
Bruce Alexander, a spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, refused to tell The Times if the federal government would approve the request.
