Officials said that a teenager driver killed a motorist in Northern California who had stopped to assist a family ducks cross the road.
Rocklin Police said that the terrible accident occurred Thursday night at 8:15 pm PDT, near the corner between Park Drive and Stanford Ranch Road, in Rocklin. This is about 25 miles north of Sacramento’s state capital.
According to police, the man had been “trying help some ducklings in the intersection”, when the driver who was heading east on Stanford Ranch fatally hit him.
The ducks did not suffer any harm.
Rocklin Police Capt. Scott Horrillo said.
Horrillo, NBC News: “At first glance it doesn’t look like criminal negligence.”
A spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff said that the victim is 41-year-old Casey Rivara.
A 12-year-old told NBC Sacramento’s KCRA affiliate that the tragedy unfolded before neighbors who applauded Rivara for her kind gestures.
The boy explained, “He got out and was shooing ducks. Everyone was clapping for him because he had been so nice.” He helped them to get over the curb, because the baby ducks were having difficulty. Then he walked up in front of our vehicle.
Angel Chow, the widow of the man, expressed her gratitude for all of those who sent condolences.
She said, “We are deeply moved by the love and support that we have received in recent days for Casey Rivara and her family,” in a statement made on Sunday night. We want to thank you all for your kind words and kindness. We are truly humbled to hear about the positive impact Casey has had on your lives.
