California transforms San Quentin State Prison, with an emphasis on rehabilitation

California officials announced on Thursday that the Bay Area's San Quentin State Prison will undergo a transformation focused on rehabilitation and education.

San Quentin State Prison, California’s oldest correctional facility, will undergo rehabilitation.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that prisoners serving prison sentences would be transferred elsewhere in California’s state penitentiary system. State prison officials stated that 668 of the state’s death row inmates are male and that about 100 of them have been transferred.

San Quentin Rehabilitation Center will take the prison’s name and provide education, training, rehabilitation, and other services to less-dangerous inmates. Notably, San Quentin houses Mount Tamalpais College. This is the first junior college accredited in the country that is located entirely behind bars.

“Today, the next step in the pursuit of true rehabilitation and justice and safer communities through this investment evidenced-backed, creating a model for safety and justice – the California Model – that will lead the country,” Newsom stated in a Thursday statement about the changes.
