Buster Murdaugh’s high school classmate Stephen Smith died in 2015, just miles from Alex Murdaugh’s South Carolina hunting land. His mother, she said, has raised enough money for exhuming her son’s remains.
Police initially called it a hit and run. The victim was located near the Islandton hunting property named Moselle by the Murdaughs. Alex shot Maggie and her youngest son Paul on June 7, 2021.
“We feel it is critical to seek out a new goal–an independent exhumation, autopsy – and we’re starting Justice for Stephen N. Smith with this immediate goal in mind,” Smith’s mother Sandy Smith wrote on a GoFundMe Page titled “Independent Exhumation, Autopsy”, which raised more than $40,000.
WYFF was informed recently by Smith that Smith had enough funds to allow for an exhumation.

They said that he had been shot in the head. Smith explained to the outlet that it was a hit and run, then he was then beat up. “… I told them hit-and-run because Stephen wouldn’t have been walking along the road. … He would have cut through the woods.”

Smith posted a Thursday update on her GoFundMe page stating that her family will “continue the exhumation immediately” and would provide updates as necessary.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has reopened an inquiry into Smith’s murder.

SLED stated in a statement to Fox News Digital that although progress has been made in the Stephen Smith death investigation, this investigation is still active and ongoing.

Eric Bland represents the Murdaughs’ housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, and he described Smith’s death earlier this month on Fox & Friends.
After Alex Murdaugh, left, allegedly stole the settlement, the Satterfields were able recover it. However, they want to hold Alex accountable for other crimes.
Bland stated that he found him in the middle a Hampton County country road. The highway department claimed he was struck by a car but there was no broken glass or car parts. His clothes and shoes were still on him, and he was suffering from a clear head injury that appeared to have been caused by another vehicle.

Bland said that Alex Murdaugh “supposedly appeared at the accident scene and, according to Sandy Smith’s mother Sandy, she received a phone call from him in which he offered to help her and she was confused about why she needed representation.”
