Federal grand jury to hear testimony on Trump documents in Florida

A federal grand jury will meet this week in Florida to hear evidence in special counsel Jack Smith's investigation of former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

According to sources familiarized with the investigation, a federal grand jury is expected to meet in Florida this week to hear evidence regarding the investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified materials.

The court proceedings in Florida are not related to the grand jury work in Washington where prosecutors have been presenting witness testimony and evidence for several months. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on this development.

Unknown is why prosecutors have convened multiple grand jurys and if they are prepared to file an indictment for either jurisdiction. The Justice Department refused to comment on this investigation.

A person familiar with this matter reported that three members of Trump’s team met with Smith and Justice Department officials on Monday. NBC News confirmed that neither Merrick Garland, nor Lisa Monaco, the Deputy Attorney-General were in attendance.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Monday, Trump attacked the Justice Department, writing in all capital letters: “How could DOJ charge me when I did nothing wrong and no other presidents have been charged?”

The FBI investigated Trump’s handling and return of classified government documents last year.

Trump was indicted in New York this spring in a case related to payments of hush funds to adult film star Stormy Daniels and a second female in the final days of the 2016 campaign. This was the first instance in which a former President faced criminal charges.
