In America, We Speak English

State of the Union: New legislation would establish English as the official language of the United States. The post In America, We Speak English appeared first on The American Conservative.

J.D. Republican Senators Vance, Ohio, and Kevin Cramer, North Dakota, will present legislation today which would make English the official language in the United States.

This is good news at the end of a week-long period of radicalization. These past days have seen a transgendered girl attack a Christian day school. The mentally ill have also planned their “day of revenge” and Rand Paul’s former staffer was stabbed in broad daylight in the capital. He was later admitted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

We can breathe a sigh of relief when we hear that members of Congress are governing in ways that may convince outsiders that Americans still live in a civilized society. The legislation would, among other things, require that all naturalized citizens “read and comprehend generally” the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and our nation’s laws.

Members who cosponsor this legislation will signify that they are at least partially a member of a political movement which says goodbye to multiculturalism and recognizes that unity is more valuable than diversity and sees the need for the federal and state governments in codifying these priorities into law.

Absolutists who believe free speech is a bad thing will raise objections. But only a few principled people will think twice. Citizens care more about preserving their American portrait than allowing newcomers to paint it.

Vance and Cramer might have a difficult time convincing their colleagues about the political value this legislation has. However, pressure could grow over time. If the moderate wing refuses even to acquiesce to this proposal, supporters might make it a rallying cry for ’24: Any native speaker will be compelled cheer to 45 declaring, “In America we speak English!”
