In Pittsburgh, an accused student is charged with shooting another person outside of school.

A student shot and killed another student early Wednesday outside a school in Pittsburgh, authorities said.

PITTSBURGH – Authorities said that one student was killed and another in custody following a shooting outside a Pittsburgh school early on Wednesday morning.

It was not immediately known the ages of those involved. Oliver Citywide Academy, according to the website of the city school district, is a full time special education center that serves grades 3-12.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it occurred around 7:25 in the morning on the steps of the school. Police said a gun was found at the scene. No other injuries have been reported.

Police have not released the names of the two students, but they said that both were school-going and under 18 years old. The authorities said that the injured student was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly after.

Pittsburgh Major Crimes Director, Richard Ford, said during a news conference at the school: “We are confident, based on information we have and video footage we’ve seen, that the actor is in our custody, and that there is no threat to other schools.” Richard Ford spoke at a press conference held in the school. He claimed that the victim died as he walked into the school.

It was not immediately clear how many staff and students witnessed the shooting. Maria Montano said that most students were on their way to school at the time of the shooting. Buses were diverted to another building.

The school was kept open for students who had already entered. The school canceled classes for the following day.

This shooting occurred a little over a year after a student was shot dead at the same school. Marquis Campbell was shot dead in January 2022 while he sat waiting for his school bus to take him home. Two brothers, who Campbell knew as students at another school, were arrested earlier this year and charged with murder and conspiracies.
