Nearly 26 years ago, JonBenet Ramsey, 6-year-old, was killed in the basement of her home by the Boulder Police Department (BPD).
JonBenet’s mother, JonBenet, reported her 6-year-old daughter missing to police on Dec. 26, 1996. She had found a ransom note asking $118,000 for JonBenet. John Ramsey, the father of the girl, discovered her body in her basement that day.
In a Wednesday statement, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold stated that “this crime has left an indescribable wound in the hearts and minds of many” and would not stop investigating until JonBenet’s murder was solved. This includes following up on all leads and working with our partners in policing and DNA experts across the country to solve this sad case. The Boulder Police Department has made this an ongoing priority.
In addition to working with private DNA labs in partnership, the department said that it will consult with Colorado Cold Case Review Team (a team of cold-case experts from the state) at some point next. BPD described this team as a tool for further cold-case investigations.

JonBenet’s halfbrother John Andrew Ramsey described the move in a Wednesday tweet as “interesting”.
He wrote, “This is positive.” “Forward progress. It is possible to catch the killer, but it will take more work.
After JonBenet’s suicide, an autopsy revealed that JonBenet died from strangulation and a head injury. According to the Boulder City Medical Examiner, her skull had suffered an 8 1/2 inch fracture. The case has not been solved by the authorities.

“The death of JonBenet Ramsey was a horrible tragedy that sparked many years of unanswered theories and questions. District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated that his office has been successful in prosecuting other cold-case homicides as well as many murder cases. “In all of these cases, it was the evidence which proved the defendant(s). This murder case requires more evidence, whether it’s DNA or any other. I appreciate the cooperation with CBI, FBI and Boulder Police Department.”
JONBENET RAMSEY MURDER: FAMILY ‘ENCOURAGED’ BY RENEWED INTEREST IN CASE, DNA TESTING POSSIBILITIES
John Ramsey, who has been trying to get more attention to the case in recent years and to find his daughter’s murderer, made this move. In spring 2021, he helped to release a petition calling for Colorado Governor. It has gathered more than 28,000 signatures. Jared Polis will allow an independent agency to assume responsibility for the investigation of BPD.

Father of five expressed disappointment in BPD’s handling over the past 26 years of the case and believes that independent research teams who have offered their help in the case can bring his daughter’s murderer to light. BPD must turn over evidence they have in custody to allow DNA testing to be performed on the items. This could help build a profile of possible suspects.
