Lori Lightfoot, Democratic Chicago Mayor, lost her bid for re-election on Tuesday night. She blames racism and sexism. Lightfoot faced eight other candidates in this race but she failed to make it to the runoff after she finished third in the election.
Lightfoot, 60 years old, said that she was a black woman in a Saturday piece for the New Yorker. “Some people, honestly, don’t support our leadership roles.”
Lightfoot stated that, regardless of the outcome, she fought the right battles and put the city on a better course after the voters rejected her policies.
From New York Post
The Chicago Tribune called her death a “political embarrassment” while arguing that crime had “skyrocketed” under her leadership.
“Lightfoot ran for mayor in 2019, arguing that crime was too high. She said she wanted to make Chicago the “safest big town in the country,” the Tribune stated in an analysis of how she went “political rock star” to rock bottom.
“But homicides mostly due to gun violence spiked dramatically in 2020-2021, from 500 murders in 2019, to 776 and 804 in the next two year, respectively.” Also, shootings and carjackings have increased dramatically.”
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that violent crime has increased by 40% in the city since her inaugural speech, when she pledged to end the “epidemic gun violence that devastates family, shatters community, holds children hostage, to fear in their own home.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R.GA) was right about Lightfoot’s loss in her tweet:
Lori Lightfoot.

Lightfoot stated that ruining Chicago was an “honorable mention”
It has been an honor to serve as your mayor. I am grateful for all the support and encouragement that you have given me over these past four years.
We have made great strides in creating a safer and more equitable city. I want to thank you all for believing in me. pic.twitter.com/l33IGevNPC
