CNN projects that Katie Britt, a Republican, will become the first female senator elected from Alabama. She won an open seat race to succeed her former boss, retired GOP Senator Richard Shelby. Britt, a former CEO of The Business Council of Alabama, was the overwhelming favorite in the general election. Alabama has had two women senators, and both were elected to fill the vacancies.
