After stopping a high-speed chase close to an elementary school, a North Carolina school resources officer was hailed as a hero.

Hampton was driving to work Wednesday morning when he heard about a Chevrolet truck speeding down the wrong road at almost 100 miles an hour.
The Swain County Sheriff’s Office then sent him to join other deputies in pursuit of the truck. They were located near West Elementary School.

Hampton said that he saw the headlights from this vehicle as he passed West Elementary School. “He rams me head on trying to pass me, so I try to block him in.”
Reginald B. McMahan was later identified as the driver. He tried to get through the bus entrance to West Elementary.
Hampton saved the day and rammed his patrol car into the truck to stop it from getting closer to the school.

Swain County Superintendent Dr. Mark Sale stated that the worst-case scenario is this truck making its way onto school property.
Sale said that there was likely some panic among the students who were at school because it was so early in the morning. However, the reaction was not such that we had the campus locked down.

According to the outlet, McMahan was taken into custody by deputies . He was charged with eluding arrest using a motor vehicle and failure to heed light and sirens, assault with deadly weapon, reckless driving to endanger and evading arrest.
He did seem to be severely impaired. At several points, he had thrown things out of the vehicle. Hampton stated that we did find ammunition in the truck but no weapon.
McMahan is currently in the county jail under a $10,000 bond. Officials don’t believe that he was targeting school during the incident.
