A Ohio woman admitted to having drowned her grandmother in order to save money on nursing home costs.
Heidi Matheny (35), was taken into custody for the murder her 93-year old grandmother Alice Matheny.
According to an Eaton, Ohio police report, the granddaughter admitted that she took her grandmother to see a doctor. The doctor advised them that the elderly woman should be placed in a nursing home. This was something they couldn’t afford and would not be covered by insurance.
Heidi stated that they enjoyed ice cream together after leaving the appointment.
Heidi allegedly told officers that she walked up to her grandmother, 93, while she was washing dishes, and pushed her head into a sink. She then held her there “until bubbles stopped”, according to WDTN’s police report.
According to reports, the 35-year old claimed that she brought her grandmother to bath to ensure she was dead.
Heidi said that it was nothing she did.
Chief Steven Hurd of Eaton Police Division stated that the confession indicated that she was tired of caring for a grandmother. It’s hard not to feel this when you have a 35 year-old granddaughter who allegedly drowned in the bathtub her grandmother, who was 93 years old.
Heidi walked to the nearest sheriff’s station after the deed was completed. Heidi exited the apartment through a glass window.
According to Eaton Police Division, officers responded to a report about a possible murder at the 300 block East Somers Street around 5:54 on Tuesday.
Officers arrived to find Alice Matheny, who was found dead in her bathtub, as Heidi had described.
The granddaughter was taken into custody and booked in Preble county Jail for a murder charge. However, the Preble County Prosecutor’s Office is still awaiting formal charges.
The grandmother was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office where she received an autopsy.
Although police have confirmed that there are no other suspects at the moment, the case is still under investigation.
