Pelosi, the first woman speaker to leave Dem leadership during seismic shift

Nancy Pelosi is a powerful legislative leader who was regarded as one the greatest speakers in American history. She announced Thursday that she would not run for Democratic leadership, but will keep her House seat.

Pelosi stated on the floor, “I will not seek to reelect to Democratic leadership in Congress,”

The first woman speaker, who regained the gavel in 2018, had intended to step down after the term. She has stated that her decision was complicated by her husband’s brutal assault last month. In addition, her husband’s brutal assault prompted her to reconsider.

Pelosi’s announcement opens the door for Rep. Hakeem Jeffreys (D-N.Y.), who will succeed her after months and months of building support.
