Pfizer recalls millions upon millions of migraine prescription medication packs because of a possible risk of child poisoning

Pfizer is recalling more than four million packages of the Nurtec ODT prescription migraine medication over a risk of poisoning to children due to a failure to meet child-resistant packaging safety requirements.

Pfizer is recalling over four million packages the Nurtec ODT prescription for migraine medication because it did not meet safety standards that are child-resistant.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that the company will recall approximately 4.2 million units (orally disintegrating) Nurtec ODT 75mg tablets. The commission stated that anyone affected can obtain a child-resistant pouch to store their product.


Nurtec ODT is being recalled over poisoning risk to children.

According to the safety commission, prescription drugs must be packaged in child-resistant containers as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.

It warned that the packaging of the products was not child-resistant and could pose a danger of poisoning to young children if they were swallowed.

Consumers were instructed to immediately secure the recall product from the reach of children. Pfizer will provide a child-resistant pouch for the free storage of the product.

The commission stated that once consumers have sealed the drug in their pouches, they can continue to use the drug as directed.

According to the safety commission, there had been no incident related to the issue as of Thursday.

Nurtec ODT shared the news on Twitter and posted a statementto their website saying that Pfizer had recently determined that Nurtec ODT packaging did not meet the child-resistant packaging requirements of oral prescription drugs. This could pose a danger to young children if they are swallowed.

Patients will be allowed to keep the product as long as they have child-resistant pouches. Nurtec ODT stated that patients can still use the product after receiving child-resistant pouches.

Nurtec ODT stated that Pfizer was in the process of creating new packaging to meet child-resistant packaging requirements. It stated that pharmacists would pack the blister packs into child-resistant vials for filling prescriptions.

According to the safety commission, the drug was distributed in pharmacies across the country as a prescription medicine between Dec. 2021 and March 2023.

Pfizer did in fact not respond immediately to an overnight comment request.
