Prince William visits Poland as an ally for Ukraine

Prince William made a surprise visit to Poland on Wednesday that underscored Britain’s support for a nation on the front line of efforts to help refugees displaced by Russia’s war in Ukraine and to assist the Ukrainian military in fighting off the invasion.

William later arrived in Warsaw and visited a center housing about 300 Ukrainian refugees. He also met children from Ukraine.

He was very proud of the strong ties that exist between the U.K. people and Poland and of the cooperation in support of Ukraine.

The prince added, “I also want pay tribute to the inspiring humanity and the Polish people.” “You have been as generous with your hearts as you are with your homes.

In the face of Russia’s aggression, the U.K. was a vocal supporter of NATO’s eastern flank. It sent troops to Poland, the Baltic states, and more than 2.3 billion pounds ($2.8 million) of military assistance to Ukraine. It has also pledged 220million pounds ($269million) of humanitarian aid.

The popular 40-year old prince is a veteran of the military who was also a civilian air-sea-rescue pilot. This makes it more personal. British politicians have often visited Poland to show their support for NATO and Ukraine, but a senior royal such as William is a symbol for the nation that can express gratitude for military personnel without having to resort to party politics.

Prince’s meetings with volunteers and refugees are also highlighted by the royal spotlight on efforts for sheltering the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who settled in Poland over the last year.

He laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Warsaw, on Thursday to pay his respects for the Poles who lost their lives in the past wars.

He will also meet with President Andrzej Duba and talk to young Ukrainians studying and working in Poland.

Wednesday’s statement by William was “Our nations have strong connections.” These ties are strengthened by our cooperation in support for the people of Ukraine, and their freedom, which are also your freedoms.
