An ex-Las Vegas, Nevada elected official is accused of murdering an investigative journalist. He wants to be represented after going through three attorneys.
Damian Sheets is the defense attorney representing Robert Telles. A request was made to the judge to withdraw from the case. A hearing has been set for February 28.
Robert Telles and veteran Las Vegas-Review journalist Jeff German are shown in a booking photo. According to prosecutors, Telles is a democratically elected official who was accused of fatally stabbing German in the back over stories that would have ruined his career as well as his marriage.
According to The Associated Press, Sheets informed Clark County District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt that he was bound by Nevada’s attorney rules of conduct and must honor the wishes of his client.

Sheets, Telles’ third lawyer in the case, stated that there was “a breakdown of communication” between him and his client. He also said that Telles had indicated that he would prefer to represent himself.
Telles, a Democrat was the leader of the county office that handles the assets of residents who have died without a will or close relatives. Telles is also an attorney.

Telles was arrested by Las Vegas police in September. He was accused of murder. He was then removed from office.

On Sept. 4, Jeff German, a 69-year-old journalist, was found dead at his Las Vegas home from multiple stab wounds. The police immediately stated that they had information and would be searching for Telles’ house in the coming days.
German had written extensively on Telles’ difficult election campaign. He detailed the hostile work environment Telles reportedly created at the city office as well as the inappropriate relationship Telles had with a staffer.
Clark County in Nevada, Public Administrator Robert Telles was arrested last week in connection to the Aug. 3 killing of investigative journalist Jeff German. He was previously held in 2020.
Telles was previously reported by Clark County staff. They accused him of bullying and favoritism.

Telles was defeated in his bid for re-election. He placed third in a Democratic primary held in June. This was based on a German report.
Staffers also reported that Telles was filmed with one his staffers in a backseat of a car, which documented evidence of their inappropriate relationship.
In the meantime, all plans for trial are being held off pending the outcome of an appeal by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to a judge’s order which prevented detectives accessing records on electronic device seized from German’s home.
