A thunderous explosion heard across the Washington Metropolitan area on Sunday afternoon was a sonic boom from a Department of Defense aircraft, according to officials.

According to officials, the loud explosion heard in Washington Metropolitan Area on Sunday afternoon was caused by a Department of Defense plane.

Residents were upset when they reported hearing an explosion around 3 pm on Sunday.

The DC Homeland Security & Emergency Management responded to the loud noise in a Tweet by saying that there was no immediate threat.

Annapolis Police says that the Department of Defense authorized aircraft is responsible for the noise heard in the DMV.

Officers claim that the aircraft created a sonic bang afterward.

The Metropolitan Police Department, the Bowie Police Department of Maryland and other local police departments sent out units to the neighborhoods in the area. They couldn’t locate any other sources for the explosion.
