Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady, suffers from dementia.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia, the Carter family said Tuesday.

The Carter family confirmed Tuesday that former first lady Rosalynn Carter suffers from dementia.

Carter Center released the announcement as Carter’s former president Jimmy Carter is receiving hospice at their home in Plains Georgia.

In a press release, the center stated that Rosalynn, 95, continues to “live happily at home, with her husband and enjoy spring in Plains, as well as visits with family members.”

Carter, who has spent most of her adult life as the nation’s foremost mental health advocate, has “improved mental health care access and reduced stigma.”

In the statement, it was noted that “One out of 10 older Americans has dementia, which affects their overall mental health.” As she did over half a century earlier, we recognize that stigma can be a barrier to people and their families seeking the support they need. “We hope that sharing the news of our family will encourage important conversations to take place at kitchen tables and doctor’s offices across the country.”
