Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr wrote an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal Friday. He called on President Joe Biden “to send in the military to combat the deadly Mexican drug cartels.”

“Declaring the cartels terrorist groups will not make them go away.” It is not enough to declare them terrorist groups.

Barr wrote that “Optimally, Mexico will support and take part in this effort. It is likely to do so once they realize that the US is committed and willing to do whatever it takes to destroy the cartels, regardless of whether the Mexican government participates.”

From New York Post:

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 106,000 Americans died in 2021 from drug overdoses. Nearly two-thirds of those deaths were due to non-methadone synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

Barr stated that the number of deaths exceeds “the number Americans killed in action during World War II’s bloodiest year.” He also noted that the cost of America’s drug epidemic was “more than $1 trillion per year, or 5% of the gross domestic product.”

He continued, “Given that there has been an explosion in illicit drug deaths between then and now, this estimate seems conservative.”
