Seven injured in Virginia Commonwealth University shooting

Seven people were injured in a shooting Tuesday on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus after a high school graduation ceremony was held there, Richmond police said.

Richmond police reported that seven people were wounded in a shooting on the Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus Tuesday, after a graduation ceremony for high school students was held.

Police said that two people were being held at a press conference.

Police said that three of the victims are being treated for injuries that they believe to be life-threatening, and four others have injuries which do not pose a threat to their lives.

Police reported that six more people were treated for anxiety, falls and other conditions.

Levar M. Stoney, Mayor of Levar M. Stoney stated that “Children had been involved at this graduation.” This is tragic, but also traumatizing. It is their graduation.

Authorities said that the shooting occurred at Monroe Park on campus at 5:13 pm.

According to the website of Huguenot High School, the graduation ceremony was to take place at the Altria Theater adjacent to the park at 4 pm on Tuesday.

A notice on the Richmond Public Schools’ website stated that the shooting occurred in a park following the graduation ceremony. The district announced that all district schools will be closed on Wednesday, and all high school commencements this week are cancelled.

The university said initially that the shooting was a part of a “threat active” on campus. In a campus announcement, school officials said that there was no threat to the community. However, Monroe Park is heavily policed.

The school reported that state and local police attended the scene and that the Richmond Police Department handled the investigation.
