New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver died after being hospitalized this week. The state plans to honor Oliver with a three-day state funeral.

  • New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver passed away after being hospitalized in the last week. Oliver was hospitalized when she was the active governor of the state.

  • Oliver served as acting governor during Phil Murphy’s trip to Italy. Murphy cut short his trip by ten day’s when he heard of Oliver’s passing.

  • New Jersey is celebrating Oliver’s life by holding a state funeral lasting three days.

New Jersey is sending off Lt. Sheila Oliver’s funeral will last three days. She died this week after being hospitalized.

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy announced in a press release that Oliver’s ashes would be laid to rest in the Capitol Rotunda on Thursday. This was followed by an honor of the same nature in her county’s historic Courthouse on August 11. The funeral will be held on August 12 at Newark’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Starting Friday, flags will be flown at half-staff on all state buildings in honor of Oliver.

Oliver died on Tuesday, just one day after the Governor’s Office announced that she had been admitted to hospital for an undisclosed health issue. Oliver’s death was not explained in a governor’s statement on behalf of her family.

Murphy was on vacation in Italy at the time of her death. She also served as acting governor.

Murphy returned to New Jersey Thursday after a 10-day trip.

He will meet with workers from the state government who worked alongside Oliver in the Department of Community Affairs. This department oversees the state’s aid to towns and cities, among other duties. Oliver was also its commissioner. In New Jersey, lieutenants governors also hold a cabinet position and can fill in for the Governor if he or she is out of state or incapacitated.

Oliver, and a Democrat was the first Black women to hold statewide office in New Jersey. She won the vote with Murphy in 2017 as well as again in 2021. She was well-known in the state government, and in 2010, she became the first Black woman in history to lead the state Assembly.

She signed several bills as Murphy’s deputy.

She signed a law in 2021 that created a pilot program for the overhaul of the juvenile justice system within four cities, with a goal to reintegrate youth into their local communities. In 2021, she also signed a bill that revived an old fund for “urban enterprises zones” to drive economic development through reduced sales tax rates.
