Six highway workers in Maryland were killed Wednesday after a car entered a work zone and struck them, state police said.

State police reported that six highway workers were killed in Maryland on Wednesday when a car drove into their work zone and struck them.

According to Maryland State Police, the crash at the Baltimore Beltway inner loop of Interstate 695 occurred at 12:40 p.m.

According to police, an Acura was caught between Jersey barriers and struck workers before being overturned.

According to state police, the six victims were contract workers working on a state highway project. They were not identified by police until notification of their next of kin.

Police said that the driver, whose identity is not known, was taken by ambulance to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

It was not clear why the car entered the work zone.

Gov. Wes Moore stated that his office was closely monitoring the situation. He tweeted : “My heart goes out the victims and their families following the tragic accident on the 695 beltway today.”

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Helicopter footage from WBAL, NBC affiliate in Baltimore shows the Acura that was flipped over and surrounded by debris and construction materials between the two Jersey barriers.

Johnny Olszewski, Baltimore County Executive, also offered his condolences.

“On behalf all the residents in Baltimore County, we offer our condolences and sympathies to the families, friends and loved ones who lost their lives today in the tragic crash. My prayers remain with those hurt in this horrible incident,” he tweeted.
