A report by Reuters states thatDiscover Card will enable its network to track purchases made at gun retailers beginning next month. This will, according to the company, help police fight gun crime.
From Reuters :
Discover made the announcement after the International Organization for Standardization, which determines the merchant categories used for payment cards, approved September’s launch of a code for gun retailers.
Gun control activists and Democratic politicians support the move. They claim it will enable financial institutions to assist authorities in investigating gun violence crimes in the United States.
Although the codes won’t show the specific items purchased by the purchasers, some Republican politicians opposed the move, arguing that it could infringe on the privacy of lawful gun buyers in the United States.
Discover stated in a statement to Reuters that it remains focused on protecting and supporting lawful purchases on its network, while also protecting cardholders’ privacy.
