As part of Gov. After tracking 4 miles of footprints, Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star found 300 pounds of marijuana in Big Bend.
Operation Lone Star was launched by Abbott in March to combat illegal immigration. He stated that the federal government is refusing to address the crisis and that border communities are still feeling the effects.

Lt. Chris Olivarez said Sgt. James Morris, Texas DPS, was the one who found the bundles.

He found a set footprints and followed it for four miles through a remote section of Big Bend National Park. He was then led to five marijuana bundles.
Each bundle weighed in at 60 pounds. They were packed in sacks that had been spray painted to blend in with the surrounding terrain.

These sacks were strapped by smugglers for carrying drugs to the area, then covering them with rocks.
Olivarez stated that drug smugglers frequent Big Bend because of its difficult terrain. He added that it can take them up to three days to reach a highway once they have entered the country.

This area is extremely desolate and treacherous at this time of the year. Its average temperature is in the upper 80s.
The summer temperatures remain in the 100s and many immigrants, according to Olivarez have died.

Olivarez stated that officers involved in Operation Lone Star may find drugs like this one, but other times tracks could lead them to undocumented immigrant.
A state trooper stopped a vehicle in Brackettville for speeding on Nov. 2.
The trooper discovered that the rear passenger seats had been removed and that six undocumented immigrants were seated in the vehicle’s back.
Latvia Jenkins, Camden, Arkansas was the driver and Kajsean Gide, Little Rock, Arkansas was the front passenger.
Jenkins and Gude were both arrested and charged for human smuggling.

All six undocumented immigrants were handed over to U.S Border Patrol agents.
Olivarez stated that he has seen people travel from outside of the state to drive undocumented immigrants for very short distances and only a few thousand dollars.
