On Wednesday, a Texas man executed his ex-girlfriend who had murdered her pregnant ex-girlfriend along with her 7-year old son 17 years ago.
Stephen Barbee (55), was declared dead at Huntsville’s state penitentiary at 7:35 PM local time. Jayden Underwood, 34, and Lisa Underwood, 34 years old were killed by Barbee in February 2005. After being suffocated at Fort Worth, the mother and her son were found in a shallow grave in Denton County.

Prosecutors claimed that Barbee murdered them because he didn’t want his wife to find out that Underwood was seven-months pregnant. Later DNA evidence revealed that Barbee was not the father.

After he confessed to the police that had killed Jayden and Underwood, he later retracted his confession and claimed that he was forced to. Since then, he has maintained his innocence and claimed that he was coerced by his business partner.
Barbee spoke about his faith in God before his death. Barbee also stated that he hoped it wouldn’t be a difficult time for his friends and family.

Barbee didn’t mention Underwood nor her son. He did not even look in the direction his victims’ friends and family.

He wept as he asked the warden to send “home” for him.
He said, “I just want everybody to have peace in his hearts.”

Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles declined to commute Barbee’s death sentence to a less severe penalty or grant a reprieve of four months.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Barbee’s appeal to stop his execution for religious freedom violations and indifference towards his medical needs.
He was the fifth Texas inmate to be executed this year and was also the last Texas inmate scheduled for execution.

15 Americans, including Barbee, were executed by lethal injection in the United States. Two more are expected to be executed on Thursday.
