Texas teens receive 25 years for each murder of a friend in 2021 fight

Two Texas teenagers were sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting to killing a friend during a fight, authorities said.

Authorities announced Tuesday that two Houston men were sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of a friend.

Christopher Paz and Leroy Lopez, both 19-year-olds, were sentenced last Wednesday after they admitted to the fatal April 4, 2020 shooting at Abraham Mata in Houston. All three were only 17 years old at the time.

Kim Ogg, Harris County District Attorney, stated that “this was a brutal and sinister murder committed by two young men who will now spend many decades behind bars.” “There are consequences for every act and in this instance, justice was served.”

Authorities said that the fight broke out when the three teenagers were in a trailer house on East Wallisville Road. Ogg’s office stated that they were all “highly drunk” at the time.

Lopez grabbed Mata at one point and slammed him on the ground. Prosecutors said that Mata was then taken out of the trailer, and shot twice.

Lopez and Paz then took Mata’s body from behind a church to a wooded area where he was stabbed multiple times.

Police took both men into custody the day after. Paz led investigators into Mata’s body, and told them the truth.
