Thanksgiving Sticker Shock: Prices up 20%

Inflation will be an unexpected guest at Thanksgiving dinner for American families.

An average Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people will cost $64.05, which is a 20% increase over last year’s $53.31 average, according to the American Farm Bureau .

This is due to the popularity of turkey, the centerpiece of most Thanksgiving tables. The average price per pound has increased 21 percent over last year, according to the Farm Bureau.

Roger Cryan, Chief Economist at Farm Bureau, stated that general inflation which reduces the purchasing power of consumers was a major factor in the rise in the average Thanksgiving dinner cost.

Comparatively to a year ago, the consumer price index for food at home has increased by 12.4 percent. Over the past 12 months, the broad index of consumer price is up 7.7 per cent.
