The ‘Barbie” production designer claims that the use of fluorescent pink in the film caused a shortage.

For the set of the upcoming “Barbie” movie, the production team couldn’t get enough pink and even caused a worldwide shortage, says production designer Sarah Greenwood.

Pink is the color that comes to mind when you think of Barbie.

Sarah Greenwood, production designer, says that the team behind the new “Barbie” film, scheduled to be released this July, couldn’t have enough color. They even caused a global shortage.

Greenwood, a reporter for the publication, said that the paint company Rosco was forced to cut back on the production of a fluorescent shade because of its overuse.

She said, “The pink has run out in the world.”

In an interview, Greta Gerwig said Architectural Digest that she wanted pinks “very bright and everything almost too much,” noting that she did not want to “forget” what made her love Barbie as a child.

Lauren Proud, Rosco’s Vice-President of Global Marketing, told the Los Angeles Times the “Barbie team” “used as much as we had.”

Proud said that there were factors which contributed to the shortage of pink paint. Proud noted that the company had already experienced a paint shortage in 2021 after a severe freeze in Texas damaged paint materials. In 2022, as the film was mid-production, a covid pandemic caused a global shortage of many products including paint.

Finding the right shade was a difficult task. Greenwood told IndieWire that pink would be the main color in the film.

She said that pink became the film’s theme, and they had to take into account all the shades of pink.

Greenwood said, “It was a great experience dealing with the artists and mixing the colors.” When we arrived at our palette, we had more than a hundred different pinks – from purpley pinks to fleshy millennial shades. The sweet spot is in the middle. It’s about 10 pinks.

Greenwood stated that painting with pink was “a constant fight” for his design team. After a color scheme was established, the environment around the color can cause it to change.

She said, “You can put it near furniture or fabric and it will flatten out.”

The latest Trailer was released on May 25. It gives a more detailed look at the plot of the movie.
