To enlist with the U.S. Coast Guard an individual has to go through basic training which includes both academic and physical components.

The Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey is the home of an eight-week program.

The course includes both academic and practical training in firearms, navigation, firefighting (including damage control), first aid, and seamanship.

After completing basic training, a seaman or a fireman will receive their first assignment about a week after.

After the interview, you’ll have to pass two tests. The first is a standard test, and the second is a physical examination. The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the standard test. All branches of the military use this test. Before joining, you will need to pass a background check.
