On Wednesday, Senator Josh Hawley (R.MO) introduced a bill that would ban TikTok in China over privacy and security concerns.

Hawley is a long-standing critic of TikTok. The app is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. He has previously claimed that the app poses a “major security threat” to the United States. He is the principal author of the No TikTok on Government Devices Act. It was passed last year. It prohibits TikTok on devices issued by the government.

After revelations by Christopher Wray, FBI Director, that Chinese officials can “manipulate content” and, if they wish, use it for influence operations, a standalone version of Haley’s bill to ban TikTok from government devices was passed by the Senate.

“TikTok, a Trojan Horse for China’s Communist Party,” Hawley stated. It is a security risk for the United States and, until it is forced into severe ties with China, it has no place in government devices,” Hawley stated in a statement. “States all over the U.S. have banned TikTok from government devices. It’s now that Joe Biden, and the Democrats, are doing the same.
