WASHINGTON – Attorneys for Donald Trump visited the Justice Department Monday. The grand jury that is investigating the former President’s handling classified documents will be meeting again this week.
NBC News confirmed that a part of Trump’s team is currently at the Justice Department in Washington. James Trusty (left), John Rowley (right) and Lindsey Halligan (right) are Trump’s attorneys at the Justice Department. They are meeting with Justice Department officials, but not Attorney General Merrick G. Garland or Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco. CBS News was the first to spot the team.
NBC News reports that the grand juries investigating Trump’s handling classified documents are expected to meet this week. According to a previous government filing, the FBI conducted a search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022 and found over 11,000 documents. This included over “one hundred documents with classified markings.”
A FBI affidavit stated the FBI had found 184 classified papers in the boxes Trump returned to National Archives before the search that took place in August 2022, and which led to the discovery of additional classified documents.
In November 2022 Attorney General Merrick G. Garland appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith, shortly after Trump launched his official campaign for the Republican nomination in 2024. Smith will investigate Trump’s handling and potential obstruction of this investigation, as well aspects of the Jan. 6, 2021 investigation.
