Video of a “Good Samaritan” helping NYPD to take down an armed suspect

A 'Good Samaritan' in New York City is being praised for helping NYPD officers apprehend a fleeing suspect who was brandishing firearms in broad daylight.

A civilian assisted in stopping an armed suspect fleeing from officers in New York City.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District New York, Jason Fleming was arrested after he displayed loaded firearms in broad daylight following a dispute at a Chelsea bodega.

After he fled from police officers, a civilian saw him and grabbed him with a revolver in hand. He then pushed him into a fence nearby. Video shows that the civilian held onto the suspect while NYPD officers managed to place him under arrest.

U.S. attorney Damian Williams stated that the defendant had illegally displayed two loaded firearms on a Manhattan street in broad daylight. One of these was a carbine rifle and scared many New Yorkers including a child. The defendant was captured by law enforcement officers and the bravery of a Good Samaritan before he could inflict any harm. His weapons are now safely off the streets.

According to a criminal complaint, Fleming, a 39 year-old New York resident entered a crowded bodega after a verbal argument with another man.

According to the complaint, Fleming was seen standing in front of the bodega’s doorway and waving a gun at a girl who tried to flee. Fleming was not able to stop the child from running out of the store onto the sidewalk. Fleming then runs past Fleming onto the sidewalk. Surveillance footage shows Fleming pulling back his jacket to expose a rifle that was swung over Fleming’s shoulder.

NYPD officers located the location where Jason Fleming allegedly threw the firearm and recovered a loaded semiautomatic Hi-Point rifle. (US Attorney SDNY).

Fleming was approached by NYPD officers after a witness called 911. The suspect fled down the street.

In a press release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that FLEMING was running and brandished a semiautomatic rifle carbine rifle in broad daylight as civilians fled from him.

Authorities said FLEMING then threw his rifle over a fence close to where customers were eating at an outdoor restaurant’s dining area. The suspect was able to retrieve a semiautomatic HiPoint carbine rifle.

According to the complaint, Fleming ran down the street with a revolver in his hand while police officers chased him on foot.

“Another civilian saw FLEMING running down the street, with a revolver in hand, and stood in FLEMING’s path. He then grabbed him and held him on until police officers, still following, took FLEMING into custody and handcuffed him,” U.S. Attorney’s Office stated.

According to authorities, Fleming is not allowed to possess firearms as he has two previous felony convictions in relation to unlawful firearms possession.

Fleming was convicted of possessing firearms following a felony conviction. This carries a maximum term of 15 years imprisonment.
