LONDON — Russian players and Belarusian athletes will be allowed to compete at Wimbledon as neutrals after Friday’s All England Club reversed its ban. It was lifted from last year.
All players must adhere to “appropriate conditions”, including refraining from supporting Russia’s invasion Ukraine.
The All England Club stated in a statement that they cannot receive funding from the Russian or Belarusian governments (including sponsorship from companies controlled by the states) for their participation in The Championships.
Other tournaments allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to compete as neutrals.
The club stated that alignment between Grand Slams is becoming more important in today’s tennis environment. “There was a very strong and disappointing response from some governing bodies of tennis to the All England Club’s position last year. These consequences would have detrimental effects on the interests players, fans, The Championships, and British tennis.
The Wimbledon tournament this year will begin on July 3. The men’s final will be held on July 16 and the women’s final will take place on July 15.
