After receiving discrimination complaints, the Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell has decided not to investigate the Boston Mayor’s ” elects of Color” Holiday Party.

The Boston Herald first reported that the Mayor’s Office of Michelle Wu sent an invitation via email to City Hall staff for an “Electeds of Color Holiday Party.” This party was intended only for six “colorful” city council members, but it was sent to everyone, including seven White councilors.

Attorney general has received four complaints for Wu, the New England city’s first Asian American Mayor, regarding the party. The complaints cited concerns about public accommodation law violations.

A spokesperson for the Attorney General said that her office has “no open investigation” into this incident.

Campbell’s Office has received four complaints regarding the event. Three of them were from people who lived out of state, and a forth did not specify a residence.

The Massachusetts Public Accommodation Law prohibits discrimination and restrictions in admission or treatment to a public place of accommodation, including racial, ethnic, religious, national, sex or gender identity, sexual preference, blindness or deafness.

The Attorney General’s Office declined to conduct an investigation, stating that the event had not been open to the general public and therefore could not have violated the law on public accommodations.

Wu received immediate criticism for the event but has defended it so far.

Her assistant, who sent the invitation to all employees by mistake, sent a 15-minute follow-up email saying:

“I apologized for my earlier email about a Holiday Party tomorrow. I sent that email to everyone accidentally and I apologize for any offense or confusion it may have caused. “Sorry for any confusion that this may have caused.”

Wu, when reporters asked her about the party, defended the assistant. She told reporters the next day, “I’m sure we have all been in situations where an email was sent and the recipients were mistaken, so it was an honest mistake.”
