LITTLE ROCK (Ark.) (AP) — Police say that an off-duty officer who was working at a Walmart as security shot and killed a suspect for shoplifting on New Year’s Eve. The suspect had attacked the officer with a knife.

Little Rock As Assistant Police Chief Joe Miller told KARK_TV, a police officer Kreshun Sr. tried to detain an individual suspected of shoplifting in the store on Sunday night when the suspect pulled out a blade and cut his hand.

In Arkansas, police fatally shot a shoplifting suspect.

Miller reported that King pulled his gun out and ordered the man not to move toward him. He then shot the man when he refused the officer’s commands.

According to Little Rock Police, the man who was shot died after being transported to a hospital. King was released from a hospital after being treated. He was placed in administrative leave, as is the standard procedure for shootings that involve Little Rock police officers.
