The man arrested for carrying a machete outside U.S. Capitol last week is an illegal Venezuelan immigrant that federal border officials previously released.

Jose Leonardo Marquez (23), was arrested on December 26 by the U.S. Capitol Police after illegally entering America.

According to , a press release by the USCP an officer noticed Marquez’s “strange behaviour” and approached him.

The agency reported that the officer had spoken with Marquez, and noticed a brick inside his pocket. At the officer’s request the man threw the brick to one side.

Marquez removed a blade and placed it at The Capitol Building.

The authorities said that the officer noticed also a handle underneath the man’s clothes. The officer called for backup and then drew his weapon to order Marquez put his hands up.

The authorities found a machete, and arrested him immediately.

He was charged for Possession and Carrying of a Prohibited weapon.

According to Immigration , and Customs Enforcement, Marquez entered into the U.S. via El Paso, Texas at an unknown date but was arrested on August 21, 2022 by officers.

ICE stated that border patrol released the man from custody due to a “lack of detention capacity” and enrolled him in a tracking program called “Alternatives to Detention.”

Marquez reported on October 5, 2023 to ICE Enforcement & Removal Operations (ERO), Washington, D.C.

Marquez, according to the agency, is currently being held by ICE ERO Washington, D.C.

ERO Washington, D.C. acting Field Office director Patrick Divver stated that Marquez posed a’significant threat’ to those in the vicinity of U.S. Capitol.

This threat was quickly mitigated thanks to our law-enforcement partners at the U.S. Capitol Police. Marquez, fortunately, is in ERO custody. He will be facing removal proceedings.
