A woman from Alabama who was on a girls trip with her family and friends, was killed by a car after she tried to retrieve luggage which had fallen off their truck.

Police say that the victim, Elizabeth Ann Atkinson (47), was in a truck early on Tuesday morning with two of her daughters and two other friends when a bag fell off the vehicle while it was driving along Highway 181, near Rigsby Rd. in Daphne.

Daphne is a city located in Baldwin County about 15 miles south of Mobile, Alabama.

Atkinson, who was picking up her spilled luggage on the road when she was killed by a vehicle approaching just before 6:30 in the morning, was reportedly doing so.

According to Fox 10, Captain Reginald Ardis, of the Daphne Police Department, said: “We believe that the back hatch of a truck opened and a piece luggage fell out on the highway.”

Ardis stated that the victim, along with another family member, had stopped to collect the clothing scattered on the ground.

Ardis stated that “at some point, she was struck by another vehicle.” She was declared dead on the spot.

The incident occurred on Highway 181 near Rigsby Road, Daphne.

Atkinson’s vehicle type or the vehicle that struck her is not known.

Ardis stated that the driver of the other vehicle was returning from work and was not speeding.

Ardis, Fox 10 reported, “The driver left… just had left an overnight job nearby and was heading to his home northbound on 181”, Ardis stated.

After receiving a call at 6:20 am about a woman picking up clothing in the road, officers were already on the way to the accident. Police said that minutes later they received another call about a pedestrian being hit on the highway.

Daphne Police reported that the victim and a family member were walking to collect the clothing when the tragedy occurred.

Investigators say Atkinson was just about to leave home for a girls vacation with her two daughters, their friends and two other women when tragedy struck.

According to USA Today, investigators determined that the vehicle which struck Atkinson had been traveling at the posted speed limit after examining the vehicle’s event data recorder. The investigators also ruled alcohol out as a factor in the accident.

According to the Miami Herald, Atkinson brought two daughters with her on the trip. They were both students at Bayside Academy located on the Eastern Shore Mobile Bay.
