A 92 year old man has made headlines after successfully completing a nearly 24 mile hike across the Grand Canyon, Arizona.

Alfredo Aliaga Burdio completed his record-breaking trek across the Grand Canyon in 2023. He currently lives in Berlin. Burdio’s journey earned him the title of the oldest male to walk from rim to rim across the Grand Canyon, according to an announcement made on New Year’s Day.

Burdio’s journey, which took a total time of 34 hours, 2 minutes and 15 seconds, included 21 hour and 15 minutes hiking.

According to the world authority on record-breaking, it took Burdio 11 hrs 15 min to hike down from North Rim Trailhead to Phantom Ranch. The next day, it took Burdio 10 hrs to hike back up from Phantom Ranch to South Rim Trailhead.

Alfredo Aliaga Burdio completed his record-setting journey across the Grand Canyon in 2023.

Burdio did not make the trek across Grand Canyon for the first time. Burdio was inspired to set the record when he hiked with his son through the Grand Canyon.

Burdio said to Guinness World Records that he had “read about the previous record-holder, Mr. John Jepkema who I admired enormously.” “I knew I was only a couple of months older than Mr. Jepkema and I thought I had a good shot at setting a record the next year.”

Burdio began his preparation for the historic trek in January 2023, roughly nine months before the actual journey. He did this by walking eight miles each day.

The record attempt had originally been scheduled to occur in early 2022, but it was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

Burdio began his hike at the North Rim and took breaks almost every hour.

Alfredo Aliaga Burdio remembered, “I was tired after the first five hours.” After a break of about 15 minutes, electrolytes and food, I felt energized and ready to take on the next seven-hours. ” (Guinness World Records).

Burdio said that his ability to slow down and remain calm in difficult times, as well as his mentality, helped him overcome the hike.

Burdio explained, “I don’t think about how far I have to go. Instead, I focus on the next step.” Then, it’s not as overwhelming and is very doable.

According to Burdio the most interesting part of his hike was meeting people who encouraged him along the way.

Burdio was also given a Tucson Fire Department Patch by a group who were honorary members of the Tucson Fire Department.

The 92 year old also expressed gratitude for those who travelled with him to witness his journey.

He said, “Can you imagine that two people, who normally would cross the Canyon in 8 hours, agreed to be witnesses and walked at my pace, while remaining unwaveringly supportive?” “Julian Coiner, and Peter Todd were truly wonderful and kind people.”

Burdio learned from his hike that it’s never too late to do something new, even if you are old.

He said, “I started living a health lifestyle at the age of 76.”

Burdio plans to hike again the Grand Canyon this year.

He said, “My son in law already has a lodge for October 2024. We want to see if my son’s parents can join us.” “But I need to see how I’m doing in 2024.” I am getting older.”
