The Supreme Court rejected Monday Alaska’s attempt to revive a proposed gold and copper mine that had been blocked for years by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Justices made no comment when they rejected the state’s direct lawsuit against the Biden administration in the High Court over its desire for the Pebble Mine to be revived in the Bristol Bay region of the state.

The EPA stopped a mine proposal a year ago due to concerns about potential impacts on a rich aquatic ecosystem that supports one of the largest sockeye Salmon fisheries in the world.

States and the federal government can sue one another and the Supreme Court. However, the justices usually deal with appeals only and hear a small number of original cases every year.

Alaska still has the option to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.
