In a press release, the islands’ Water and Power Authority stated that there had been a loss in electricity generation around dawn at the Estate Richmond Power Plant.
The afternoon update to the official statement said that the crews were working to fix the issue.
Islandwide power outages are becoming more common on St. Croix where over 41,000 people reside. The largest generator, which runs on only diesel, is inefficient, according to officials. Smaller units, however, are not well maintained, older and cannot handle the extra load when the larger one fails.
