On Tuesday evening the United States Coast Guard rescued three people and found two dead on an overturned boat near Sitka in Alaska.

A Coast Guard statement said that an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka responded to the scene at Chichagof Island around 5:15 p.m.

The patients were then transported to Sitka Airport, where they received medical treatment.

According to Coast Guard Captain. Darwin Jensen (commander of Sector Southeast Alaska) reported that the two people who were missing were found dead the next day in the cabin.

Jensen stated that it was with a heavy-hearted heart that he received the news from the Sitka Fire Department about the two individuals inside the cabin. “We are sending our strength and support to the family at this difficult time, and we thank our partner agencies in this case for their assistance.”

Around 4:48 pm on Tuesday, the Sitka Police Department notified Coast Guard watchstanders in the Sector Southeast Alaska Command Center of the overturned boat.

After receiving reports that the vessel had overturned, Coast Guard Cutters Douglas Denman & Kukui as well as an HC-130 aircraft from Air Station Kodiak arrived on the scene Tuesday.

The search for survivors began after they tracked the drift of the vessel. Air Station Sitka conducted further searches on Wednesday morning and Tuesday night.

At approximately 4:48 pm on Tuesday, the Sitka Police Department notified Coast Guard watchstanders in the Sector Southeast Alaska Command Center of the overturned boat.

On Wednesday afternoon, only two people were still missing. The Sitka Fire Department, Alaska Wildlife troopers and other agencies then used an underwater unmanned drone to search the vessel. They were eventually located.

The Coast Guard stated that recovery operations will begin once the conditions on the scene improve.

The Coast Guard reported that the temperature of the water was 44 degrees at the time, while the air temperature was 31 degrees. The initial weather conditions included 8-10 knot winds causing seas of 9 ft.
